December 14, 1998 The translation process begins with
converting the original text into electronic format. I accomplish this by employing
advanced OCR software capable of recognizing English and Russian text. Whenever possible I
try to preserve the original layout of the document. This includes photos, clip arts and
other graphic elements. After the translation process is completed I can output the
translated document using a high-quality photo printer.
Once the document is converted into a
word processor file, I make sure that it does not contain any spelling errors or
extraneous characters. Then I use professional machine translation software to
pre-translate the text. This allows me to save time and money for my customers. This rough
computer translation serves as a guideline for the following editing process. Finally, I
go over the finished translation several times to ensure its accuracy and good style.
The translated text is converted into
the original document's layout, preserving all graphics, and printed using a
high-resolution ink-jet printer. An electronic copy of the translated document is provided
to the customer on a floppy disk or a CD, depending on the amount of text and graphics.
For quick delivery I can fax or e-mail the translation to the customer, which will be
followed by a printed copy in the mail.
When translating documents of technical
nature I frequently need to convert and translate graphs and tables. This takes a great
deal of effort and the right equipment. I am using a high-resolution color scanner to scan
graphs and tables separately from the text, convert them to the target language and insert
them into the translated document. A photo camera is used to digitize brittle or
large-format documents that otherwise may be damaged in the scanner.
While performing a technical
translation it is absolutely essential to use the correct terminology as even a smallest
deviation from the original text may have unpredictable results. For this reason I keep a
comprehensive library of highly specialized dictionaries covering a wide range of
scientific and technical subjects.
